I spent nearly 30 years as a career art teacher in the Utah public school system. Initially I worked with students on the West Side of Salt Lake Valley in Jordan School District and, later, at a state charter school, East Hollywood High School.
I received my BFA in Drawing and Painting form the University of Utah in 1988, as well as my secondary teaching certification in visual art.
As a teacher, my philosophy was to help students find their voices and gain an appreciation of art.
After retiring, I have been focusing on finding my own voice and expressing my thoughts and perceptions about life through art.
As with my Tarot deck, much of my work is digital compositing, but oil painting is gaining ground.
My work has been exhibited locally, in New York, and it was part of a one day digital exhibit
at the Louvre in Paris. Of which I am very, very proud! One day in the Louvre is more than I ever thought I would get!
Painting enlivens me and the figure is my favorite vehicle.
Over the past several
years, I have been working on a deck of Tarot cards. I first started
this project in the 80's, but found that my time was used by raising my
children and teaching school. Occasionally, I would take up the project
again and would notice that my work had changed noticeably. In some
cases it was my aesthetic, in others, it was my skill. About ten years
ago, I started photographing people more frequently and found that I was
bored with pure photography. I had worked with liquid light on
watercolor paper and pinhole cameras. I tried hand coloring B&W
35mm prints. All fun, for sure, but, digital compositing seemed like
the best direction to go. Again, my work was on and off with my
aesthetic and facility changing over and over. After
retiring from teaching in 2016, I began focusing on the deck. Slowly,
it came together. I copyrighted it in 2019, even though I still tweak
it on occasion. I have found that I enjoy placing individuals into environments that illustrate something they identify with or remind me of. With
this in mind, I would like to have clients tell me what they would like
to be. It could be an astrological sign, a bird. It could be a fairy
tale character or a character from history. Or a remake of a Tarot
card. We are only limited by our imaginations. The process would entail
a photo shoot with me or a photo of the client that I would be given
permission to manipulate into something new.
